Presentation and background

Torino European Youth capital 2010 is also meant to be health and wellbeing experience!

Following the success of the conference on Youth and Health, organised by the European Commission in cooperation with the European Youth Forum and other youth organisations on 9-10 July 2009 in Brussels, the IUHPE-CIPES European Centre is organising a three-day event in Torino to offer young people an opportunity to have a real say about their health and to share their views with stakeholders from all over Europe.

This event is also intended as follow-up of the first European Conference on Youth health and well-being organised by the Italian Youth Ministry, which took place in Rome on 16-18 June. In fact, the event in Torino will focus on the same topics debated in Rome, namely sexual health and food-related issues.

In addition both topics are considered as priorities of the national governmental programme Gaining health in adolescence (Guadagnare salute in adolescenza) led by the Italian Health Ministry.

Personal wellbeing helps young people embrace change, feel positive about who they are and enjoy healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilled lives. Through active learning opportunities they recognize and manage risk, take increasing responsibility for themselves, their choices and behaviors and make positive contributions to their families, schools and communities.

As young people learn to recognize, develop and communicate their qualities, skills and attitudes, they build knowledge, confidence and self-esteem and make the most of their abilities.

As they explore similarities and differences between people and discuss social and moral dilemmas, they learn to deal with challenges and accommodate diversity in all its forms.

The world is full of complex and sometimes conflicting values. The aim of this initiative is twofold.

Firstly, it aims at helping the participants to explore this complexity and reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes. They identify and articulate different feelings and opinions, learn to manage new or difficult situations positively.

Secondly, it aims at providing young people with opportunities in the perspective of co-shaping the environment which we all live in. Torino will be a platform for discussion and encouraging young people to pursue dialogue with authorities. This shall give them a chance to co-create our society which should be based on modern values, consensus, open-mindness. We wish young people take action and contribute to the future of the European Union with their ideas and visions as far as their health is concerned.

The initiative is realized with the support of DG SANCO, Municipality of Turin (Comune di Torino), Italian Youth Ministry (Ministero Italiano della Gioventù)

OBJECTIVES of the YOUTH HEALTH EVENT

-    Make young people experience wellbeing, individually and in group, for personal wellbeing makes a major contribution to the promotion of personal development

-    Encourage young people’s critical and systemic thinking on health-related issues

-    Offer young people new tools to explore the complexity and to critically analyze the holistic and trans-disciplinary interdependence between different factors which may affect health

-    Offer young people a platform for discussion and encourage them to pursue dialogue with authorities and to contribute to the future of the European Union with their ideas and visions as far as their health is concerned
